We manage donor funded programmes on behalf of Corporate customers.  Intakes are at differing time throughout the year and places are limited. Our training is mudular based and dependend on the individuals own performance.  The minimum number of weeks is 12 weeks for Phase I (year 1) followed by 12 weeks in Phase II (year 2) and  final revision during Phase III (year 3) which is 8 weeks.  Each trade has a legislated numer of hours as a requirement.  Please contact our Marketing department; details of which is on our website under Contact Us.

You will need to obtain an N2 qualification.  If you have passed grade 12 with a science and maths pass rate of more than 40%,  you will only need to write and pass 2 of the 4 subjects (Engineering Drawing and Trade Theory) to obtain your N2 qualification.  If you have not passed the grade 12 science and maths exam, then you would need to enrol for all 4 subjects (Maths, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing and Trade Theory) to obtain your N2 qualification.

Learnerships are generally 1 year qualifications whilst Apprenticeships level 2/3 and 4 can take up to 3 years.

You will need to:

1. Provide proof that you have the minimum entry requirement for the trade
2. Provide proof that you have completed the curriculum component for the trade
3. Comply to the medical requirement for the trade
4. Complete a pre-trade assessment
5. Complete the application form for the trade test

Section 28 certification involves the Recognition of Prior Learning. If you want to write the Trade Test but have not completed any formal apprenticeship, you will need to follow the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) route.
You will need to submit a complete Portfolio of Evidence (POE) presenting proof of skills acquired. You will need to be formally assessed by an independent assessor regarding knowledge and skills both in practice and in theory. ATI can assist with this in order to identify the gaps as well as the training required to remedy this.  A competency certification will then be produces by ATI for each area. Thereafter a Section 26D Trade Test may  be applied for.

Until the QCTO determines the entrance requirements contemplated in regulation 2(2)(b) the
minimum level of education for access to a trade test will be the successful achievement by a learner before, during or after an artisan learning programme of:

• N2 Certificate including the four relevant subjects of maths, engineering science and a fourth subject as required by the trade; or
• Technical trade theory programs quality assured by a SETA deemed to be equivalent to NQF level 3; or
• Relevant Engineering NCV Certificate with seven subjects at NQF level 3; or
• Technical Grade 11 with Maths, Science, Language and related trade theory subject; or
• Relevant (directly related to the trade theory subjects) N6 certificate or National Technical Diploma (T, S or N stream.)

In addition to the above mentioned minimum level of educational qualification the applicant
must also have:

• successfully completed all off the job practical training unit standards (in the case of learnerships) or modules (in the case of an apprenticeship) of an artisan learning program at an accredited training provider as verifiable by training records.
• satisfied the requirements of the structured workplace, on the job, learning for a minimum period of 12 months verifiable through a workplace learning record (e.g logbook).

The minimum level of knowledge for recognition of prior learning referred to in regulation 2(3) is a 50% pass in a written knowledge assessment that is an integral part of a recognition of prior learning toolkit approved by NAMB.

Until such time as the occupational curricula and /or RPL toolkits for a specific trade are
developed, candidates who have not gone through a formal artisan learning program but possess relevant years of work experience in the related trade may be granted access to a trade test if they have completed:

• N2 Certificate including the relevant trade theory subjects and a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience; or
• Technical trade theory programs quality assured by a SETA deemend to be at NQF level 3 and a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience; or
• Relevant Engineering NCV at NQF level 3 and a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience; or
• Relevant engineering NC(V) 4 plus completion of all relevant work experience modules and a minimum of 18-months relevant work experience; or
• Technical Grade 12 with Maths, Science and related trade theory subject and a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience; or
• Grade 9 and a minimum of 4 years relevant work experience; or
• Relevant (directly related to the trade theory subjects) N6 certificate or National Technical Diploma (T,S or N stream.) with 18 months relevant work experience.

The previous artisan qualification (section 13(12) and section 28(1)) regulated by the previous
Manpower Training Act (No. 56 of 1981)
(http://www.labour.gov.za/DOL/downloads/legislation/acts/skills-development-act/)has been replaced by section 26(D) of the Skills Development Act (SDA) (no 97 of 1998, as amended) (http://www.labour.gov.za/DOL/legislation/acts/skillsdevelopment/skills-development-act-and-amendments) as from 1 October 2013.
